I haven't come up with a clean way to scroll variable length messages yet.  there's lots of info on the interweb about driving matrix using PIC and other microcontrollers, scrolling just takes static data and shifts it left or right one line at a time.  the problem is buffering that data ahead of time, and what to do if the length of the data changes while you're scrolling.</description>

I had been thinking of doing something like this, using a little Zilog webserver board I have laying around to act as an LED 'post it' the family could leave messages on from their computers. I wasn't sure how good it would look with one LED matrix, so I spent a couple of days whipping up a Java program to simulate it. 

I think yours looks pretty good.
